Inside UCPD’s Daily Crime Log

In compliance with the Clery Act, which requires universities to release information on crime reports occurring within their jurisdictions, the University of California Police Department publishes its Daily Crime Log on its website. The log, presented as a downloadable document for each day, contains case numbers, times, locations and brief descriptions of criminal activity reported to UCPD.

The Daily Californian collected more than 20,000 crime log entries from the past seven years and created an interactive map which visualizes recent crime log activity as it is published. Keep scrolling to read our analysis, or click the button to explore the live-updating tool.

When a reported crime violates the California Penal or Vehicle Code, the relevant section and article are cited.

In some cases, the crime descriptions, which are populated by UCPD’s records management system, are self-explanatory.

In other cases, however, the crime description is written in acronyms.

In these cases, reading the linked code definition can help you interpret the log entry.

Information-only report incidents make up a large portion of the log entries. They represent incidents that did not constitute a penal code violation but are still worthy of documentation, according to UCPD.

Rules violation incidents document violations of campus policies and regulations.

Civil information report incidents are when someone requests information or guidance on a civil matter such as a roommate dispute.

Most crime reports are centered around campus and University Village, a family housing community for UC Berkeley students.

Outside assist incidents can take place outside of UCPD’s normal jurisdiction and may involve other local agencies.

Our interactive tool automatically adds data from the Daily Crime Log as it is added to UCPD’s website.
